Embracer Games Archive aims to create a complete physical collection of gaming history

Embracer Group has revealed that it is on a mission to create what it calls the Embracer Games Archive, a physical collection of every console, accessory, and game ever released. This mission is at at an early stage but the early numbers are impressive. The archive currently has 50,000 games, consoles, and accessories located in Karlstad, Sweden. The effort is being led by Embracer Games Archive CEO David Boström.

And think about how much that could mean for games’ culture and enabling video games research… At Embracer Games Archive, we believe that games carry a heritage worth celebrating and safeguarding for the future. Our goal is clear – We want to archive and save as much of the video games industry as possible.”

Experts have already been recruited to help to continue to build the collection, with the aim to also start cataloguing this year. Further down the line the archive will serve as a place for researchers and journalists to get answers to queries. There are also plans for the Embracer Games Archive to work with museums and institutions to create satellite exhibits of some of the content from the archive.

Embracer is looking to work with the gaming community, and collectors specifically that may want to contribute to the Embracer Games Archive. You can contact retro gaming advisor Thomas Sunhede at [email protected], who you can send details about your collection and the valuation of it. Embracer does not have a most wanted list of items yet. However, in the future the company will post about games it is looking for and for which platform. The archive cannot be visited in person, in case you were wondering.
