Rockstar confirms that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development

In the latest Grand Theft Auto Community Update, Rockstar has confirmed what everyone already basically knew: Grand Theft Auto 6 is in active development. The confirmation comes as the company wraps up development on GTAV and GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date for that now set for 15th March.

With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.

On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!

Please try to look shocked by the news?

GTA 6 rumours have been floating around for years now, and certainly hotted up following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. Will it return to Vice City, perhaps? Will it have a female protagonist for the first time? It’s entirely possible, of course, but anything you find online is just going to be wild speculation.

What we can expect is that the game is targeting the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, and almost certainly looking to leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind. That might not be leaving too much money on the table, if GTA 6 comes out in 2023 or 2024. By then, this generation of console will be in full swing and a huge audience would be ready to lap up a new GTA. Not only that, but expect a new GTA Online to be a huge part of whatever Rockstar is creating, with the need to fully surpass what the evergreen GTA Online from GTA V is capable of doing.

So when will we actually see some GTA 6? Rockstar tend to leave things until around 1 year before they plan to release a game, though delays tend to shuffle things back a fair bit after that point.
