Gamer mom’s wholesome post dispels Wild Rift community stereotypes

Since Wild Rift is a mobile game marketed to be simpler than League of Legends, many assumed the player base was incredibly young. But a wholesome Reddit post helped dispel this stereotype, which has become prevalent in the community.

“What kind of people play Wild Rift? I’m a stay at home mom and play during baby naps, but [am] curious if most of the players of Wild Rift are college students,” the Reddit user posted, pondering the player base’s average age.

Within the post, many other subjectively older community members vocalized their presence.

“Nah. I’m a 42 year old dad. It’s 95% of my gaming,” one gamer dad responds. The post then gained traction, providing a safe space for the “older” members to announce their age. This then allowed these players to bond with one another thanks to their shared experiences.

“Glad to see I’m not the only one in the 40’s! 41 y/o business owner. Basically all I play — easy to sneak in a game or two,” another member added.

“Quick gaming experiences with a good build up and conclusion… hard to get them elsewhere with time constraints,” one user commented, summing up many of Wild Rift’s redeeming qualities.

Anonymity allows toxicity to flourish

This post created a certain amount of clarity for some — dispelling many players’ previous preconceived notions regarding the fellow peers in Wild Rift.

“I gotta say, I thought I was yelling at 12 year olds in my games and didn’t think it would be a bunch of dads and moms at home. Now I’m the child,” one player shared.

Since Riot doesn’t openly share their player statistics, it’s difficult to see what the general demographic for the game is. Therefore, many have a skewed perception of the player base due to the more vocal members of the community.

Because Wild Rift’s content creators, professional players, and even developers are on the younger end of the spectrum, many members of the community are blissfully unaware of the large number of older players.

“Wild Rift’s average player base is actually higher compared to PC LoL. The portability and shorter duration of matches resonates better with the lifestyle and hours of an adult audience,” one Redditor shared.

The allied jungler, who the entire team flamed for sucking, may be a parent of two who simply doesn’t have the time to learn every little nuance of the game.

After all, it is easier to be toxic when not knowing the victim of the verbal harassment. It’s easier to spread hate to those assumed to be younger, as the feeling of age superiority gives the toxic verbal harasser an innate supremacy over the other.
