Godfall on PS Plus won’t include the campaign

Godfall will be one of the three games featured in December 2021’s PlayStation Plus lineup. However, this isn’t the same version of Godfall that originally launched alongside the PS5 last year.

Counterplay Games has revealed Godfall: Challenger Edition which will be available to download via PS Plus from December 7, 2021, to January 3, 2022.

The name might imply a competitive element but that isn’t the case. This revised edition of Godfall strips out the singleplayer campaign and drops you in at the deep end.

From the start you’ll have access to all 12 Valorplates, which are essentially Godfall’s character classes. Previously, you’d need to grind resources to unlock them and make use of their unique suit abilities. Godfall: Challenger Edition also allows you to hit max level immediately.

What’s the point in skipping the bulk of the main game, you may be asking? The developers have no doubt taken on board feedback from players and critics, using this re-release to focus on what their game does best.

The singleplayer campaign in Godfall was a grind fest that lacked flavour or a compelling story to lead you along. Where the game did occasionally shine, however, was the chunky skill-based combat.

Godfall: Challenger Edition nudges players towards its endgame content, split between three main modes. These include the recently released Lightbringer, the randomised Dreamstones encounters, and the challenging Ascended Tower of Trials.

Of course, one of the biggest changes since Godfall launched is the inclusion of online matchmaking. This was sorely missing on day one, constantly holding the game back. It has been confirmed that online cross-play will be enabled between PS4 and PS5.

If you already own Godfall, then you can upgrade to the Challenger Edition, also earning bonus rewards for previously defeating campaign bosses.

It takes a while for Godfall’s combat to truly open up and when it does, you’ll revel in its beefy ballet of well-timed blows and counters. That said, it’s hard to ignore the flimsy scaffolding that keeps this PS5 launch title standing, the lack of matchmaking, and a loot system you’ll quickly lose interest in. Although still great fun in short bursts, this isn’t the rousing next-gen RPG experience you’ve been searching for.

We’ll be looking to revisit the game when it drops on PlayStation Plus alongside this month’s other games, Mortal Shell and LEGO DC Super-Villains.
