Iris and the Giant fuses cards, RPG and roguelike as one

iris and the giant launch

Stomping along to release on Xbox and PlayStation is Iris and the Giant, Klabater’s touching roguelike that mixes in card playing elements with RPG mechanics. It’s really good too.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Iris and the Giant sees you playing as Iris, a young woman who is looking to brave her fears, navigating her way around an imaginary world. The problem is, Iris has inner demons that need pushing back, all in order to soothe the rage of the giant that is found within.

The third of a series of five games in which Klabater have picked from the developmental geniuses at Goblinz Publishing, following on from Legend of the Keepers and As Far As The Eye, Iris and the Giant runs a rather brilliant minimalist art style that urges you to explore the worlds around, whilst the soundtrack looks to do likewise – in fact, you can purchase the soundtrack as a separate £3.29 download from the Xbox Store should you like what the audio is doing.

It’s the combination of ideas that we like though, with our review running a 4/5 score, detailing the addicitve card-play, the cleverly integrated narrative and the brilliant variety of demons.

From there, the key game features include:

  • Tactical battles: face monsters in fights mixing CCG mechanics with RPG and roguelike elements,
  • Deckbuilding: build a deck as you progress. Choose the best options for your long-term strategy out of a wide variety of cards,
  • Deep customization: the game is packed with 51 cards and choices that specialize your character, your deck, and your playstyle,
  • A touching adventure: a lot of care was put into adding a compelling and emotional story to a genre traditionally light on narrative,
  • A progressive difficulty curve: makes the game accessible to many, but offers a challenge to even the most hardened of players.

Go and grab a download of Iris and the Giant from the Xbox Store right now. You’ll find it playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in Standard Edition form for £12.49 or in that Deluxe Soundtrack Edition for £14.24. It’s on PlayStation too.
