Jonah Williams back in Cincinnati for Bengals minicamp

Jonah Williams is back in Cincinnati for the Bengals mandatory minicamp. When the Bengals tackle arrived at the teams facility last week, he made one thing clear, and that was that he was only there because he is a competitor. The Bengals signed new starting left tackle, Orlando Brown Jr., during free agency in March. This signing prompted Williams to request for a trade and sit out of OTAs earlier this offseason.

Williams had been the Bengals starting left tackle in every season he’d been healthy in since coming into the league in 2019. Williams struggled last season though, allowing twelve sacks from the left side. He told Bengals reporters last Tuesday that he learned of the Bengals signing, Brown Jr., through Apple News on his phone thus feeling disrespected. He made a point during his interview with reporters that his lack of communication with the front office was the reason for his trade request. Williams added to that by saying, “the frustrating thing is that I still haven’t heard anything back.”

The Bengals tackle is going into his final season under his current contract with the team. He underwent surgery in February for a dislocated kneecap he suffered in the wild-card round against the Ravens. Being fully healthy, the tackle hopes to have a better upcoming season. Williams so far has spent his offseason rehabbing in California while awaiting a trade to unfold since free agency. Though a trade hasn’t materialized, he understands this season will be all about showcasing his value for his future.

Fresh Start For Williams

The Bengals had always envisioned him playing on the right side since the signing of Brown Jr.. Now, it seems like that vision could become a reality. Williams told reporters that he was “fired up to do it”, when asked about playing right tackle for the Bengals this season. His last snaps at the position came all the way back at Alabama during his college days. Still, on paper, the Bengals offensive line looks like it could hold up very well during the 2023 season. Something young quarterback, Joe Burrow hasn’t been accustomed to in any of his first three NFL seasons.
