Kirby and the Forgotten Land is coming out in March – new gameplay and co-op revealed in trailer

Kirby and the Forgotten Land will release for Nintendo Switch on 25th March 2020, Nintendo has announced. The new game is the first fully 3D platforming adventure for the ravenously hungry pink puff ball, and a new trailer has revealed more about how that transition will work, as well as showing off co-op play.

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, our hero finds himself waking up on the shores of a new realm that features a great big, but abandoned and overgrown city (including a shopping mall that looks like it’s been cartoonified right out of The Last of Us). Where Kirby games have typically stuck with side-scrolling platforming action, this game switches things up to 3D platforming action as Kirby adventures to save the kidnapped Waddle Dees from the Beast Pack.

The new trailer shows off a lot of how this adventure will come together. Obviously there’s Kirby sucking in enemies and copying abilities like the new Drill to dive under ground and Ranger abilities to dress up like a Safari ranger, alongside returning favourites. You can also be joined by a second player, who takes on the role of Bandana Waddle Dee – they’re a Waddle Dee that wears a bandana, surprisingly enough.

The trailer also showed off some mini-games, such as serving Waddle Dees at a kiosk, fishing, and grabbing collectables from gumball machines.

It looks set to be a real highlight of Nintendo’s 30th anniversary celebrations for the character. Nintendo promise more Kirby goodness in the months to come.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a massive shift from the last Kirby game that was released for Nintendo Switch. In our Kirby Star Allies review, Dave wrote:

“Kirby Star Allies feels like a greatest hits collection rather than its own unique experience. It takes inspiration from the majority of classic Kirby games and while it doesn’t have quite the level of scope that Kirby Super Star had back in the day, there’s a great amount of fun to be had. It’s certainly more fun with friends and is well made, having plenty of nostalgia for the pink puffball’s fans, but it’s certainly the easiest Kirby game in years.”
