High-speed platformer Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is coming later this year and, going by the announcement trailer, it’s taken a leaf or three out of Sonic the Hedgehog’s book.
Sure, protagonist Koa may not have quills and red sneakers but she’s got the hang of going fast, rolling into a ball and battling oversized bosses. There’s also a dash of Crash Bandicoot in there, but on the whole it looks more forgiving than the orange one’s adventures.
Koa and her friend Napopo, who seems to be some kind of backpack-dwelling bear, are on a mission to recover some stolen pirate loot. Presumably that’s “recover” in the Nathan Drake sense of the word, though we expect Koa to rack up considerably fewer corpses than one of Drake’s killing sprees.

If Mara sounds familiar it’s because Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is one of several game set in developer Chigbig’s Mara universe which started with Summer in Mara. That said, the latter was a life sim and an entirely different kettle of fish from Koa’s platforming action. We’re hoping that, in the absence of a good Sonic game, since Sonic Mania at least, it’ll fill a hedgehog-sized gap in our gaming schedules.
Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is set to arrive later this year, launching on Xbox One, Switch, PS4 and PC. You can check out the trailer above and wishlist it on Steam now.
