Netflix share first look at Sonic Prime animated show

Netflix has shared a short snippet of the upcoming Sonic Prime animated TV show, set to debut on the streaming service a little later this year. It’s part of the company’s After School programming that’s aimed at kids, with the first look at Sonic Prime’s 3D animation coming right at the end of the montage trailer.

Sonic Prime will be a new 24-episode animated series featuring the iconic platforming hero in “a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.”

This is the culmination of a partnership that was announced back in February 2021, with next to nothing known about the project since then. Sonic Prime is a completely standalone adventure and production to the recent live action film series from Paramount, and also unrelated to the Knuckles TV show they announced for Paramont+, though it’s certain that Netflix is hoping to get a little slice of the two films’ popularity.

Sonic Prime certainly feels like it’s quite a bit closer to what people expect from Sonic compared to film Sonic’s horrifying original visage, but what’s going on with his feet in that clip? Cartoony, yes, but I can’t tell if Sonic’s going slow or fast?

It’s been a busy 30th anniversary for Sonic, as Sega build up to the release of a new era-defining game, Sonic Frontiers, which is due out later this year. There’s also the remastered version of the series’ classic 2D original, Sonic Origins, though Sega seems intent on annoying its fans even more than pleasing them, by adding weird and unnecessarily confusing DLC, and by choosing to delist the previous versions of the games that were available across most platforms.
