Northwestern Fires Pat Fitzgerald

Northwestern Fires Pat Fitzgerald

The University of Northwestern has decided to fire head football coach Pat Fitzgerald according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Their decision stems from an investigation into hazing going on in the Northwestern football program.

The internal investigation was unable to confirm whether the coaching staff had knowledge of the hazing. After the investigation, Northwestern initially suspended Fitzgerald for two weeks.

On top of the investigation into hazing, The Daily Northwestern released a story on Monday where former players commented on the racist environment inside the Northwestern football program. Ramon Diaz Jr. and two other former players talked about their experiences with racism while playing for Northwestern.

Fitzgerald, 48, has coached Northwestern for the last 17 seasons and has a 110-101 record at the school. He made 10 bowl games and had three 10-win seasons over his tenure. Fitzgerald was the winningest coach in Northwestern history and played at the school himself.
