Panthers Fire Defensive Coordinator Phil Snow

The Carolina Panthers have continued cleaning house after firing head coach Matt Rhule. Defensive coordinator Phil Snow has also been fired following a 1-4 start. Steve Wilks will take over head coaching duties, but the role of interim defensive coordinator has not been filled.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.

Snow has had a long and interesting career, both in college and the NFL. He started coaching college football in 1982 at Boise State, bouncing around to seven different colleges. He also held positions with the Lions from 2005-2008.

The likely reason Snow received the defensive coordinator job with the Panthers due to coaching with Rhule at both Temple and Baylor. It stands to reason that since Carolina fired Rhule, they want a new defensive mind in the room that is not so closely tied to him.
