Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis Arriving To PS4 For Global Players This August

Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, Sega’s free-to-play MMORPG will be released on PS4 (and playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility) this August for global players.

PSO2 is a long-running MMORPG, over ten years, but it was only locked to Japan (and for a short period of time, also in Southeast Asia). PSO2 being made available globally in 2020 was announced by Microsoft at E3 2019, one of the first of many announcements to show how Xbox is supporting games made in Japan. The most recent of this seen this year is seeing the three Persona games (published by Atlus, owned by Sega) coming to Xbox.

As such, PSO2 and its new counterpart PSO2 New Genesis (released last year) have been exclusive to PC and Xbox for global players, despite a PS4 version being available in Japan.

Now two years later, PlayStation players can now jump into the sci-fi MMORPG that will appeal to a lot of anime fans. Players can straight jump into PSO2 New Genesis, the new version with a massive overhaul in combat and open-world-ish mechanics, or the classic PSO2 which has a Monster Hunter-esque gameplay loop.

PSO2 New Genesis, and PSO2 Classic will be arriving on PS4 for global players on August 31.
