Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Begins

The Philadelphia Eagles have started training camp as of July 26th. New players will get an opportunity to prove that they have what it takes to make the 53-man roster. Furthermore, veteran players and newer players from last year will get an opportunity to either move up or down the depth chart, depending on how they perform. Training camp is a vital part of the NFL year to really get a gage on how a team will look heading into the preseason and the regular season. This article will give some things watch out for as training camp begins.

The Quarterback Situation

The Philadelphia Eagles are pretty set on Jalen Hurts being QB1 for the start of the regular season. For now, Hurts is the best chance for Philadelphia if they want to win games. He led the Eagles to a winning season and a postseason berth last year. There have been questions about his game throughout the offseason regarding his mechanics and his decision-making. Hurts will get an opportunity to show that he has improved his game from last year and he can reassure Eagles fans he is in fact the right man for the job coming into the season.

Hurts does have some competition with Gardner Minshew returning for a second season with the Eagles. He had an opportunity to play some last year and looked decent doing so. Philadelphia also has former Dolphins quarterback Reid Sinnett. He was on the Dolphins practice squad for a while, ultimately making it to the main roster when Tagovailoa got hurt last season. He was later waived by the Dolphins.

Lastly, the Eagles also have Carson Strong. He had a legendary college career at Nevada. However, he does have some health concerns as he got a procedure that forced him miss his last year in college. It should be interesting to see how mobile he is during training camp. His best friend will be his arm strength during training camp.

Philadelphia Draft Picks

Another interesting thing as training camp begins is how will the draft picks look and will any of them perform well enough to earn starting positions. Eagles first round pick Jordan Davis will more than likely get playing time this year, but he would have to have a monster training camp to place in front of Javon Hargraves who led the Eagles in sacks in 2021.

Furthermore, second round offensive tackle Cam Jurgan will also probably have wait to get a starting spot. He is behind Jason Kelce who has proven himself as one of the better offensive tackles in the league. In addition, Kelce has also been rumored to be retiring soon, so Jurgen’s time will come.  The same is true with Nakobe Dean, he is behind T.J. Edwards who was a menace for Philadelphia last year, which makes Dean’s chances slim to be named starter at the beginning of the regular season.

The most important thing, though, is that all these rookie players will more than likely get on the field during the regular season. However, anything can happen in the NFL with injuries and setbacks.

Second string RB

An interesting battle during training camp will be among the running backs. No, not for the first-string position but for the second position on the depth chart. Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell have both proved they can be viable second-string running backs. Scott is speedy and elusive and does have the ability to be a force receiving the ball as a running back.

However, Gainwell is known for his hands and made a name for himself as a back who can catch the ball and doing something with it. Being a running back with the ability to catch the ball is needed in the NFL these days. This could be the deciding aspect of who will get the second-string spot come the regular season. This battle should come down to the wire, but it is predicted that Kenneth Gainwell will get the spot. He had a good season with the Eagles last year and showed glimpses of greatness.
