VRChat Major Security Update Backlash

Within the next couple of days, there will be a VRChat major security update rolling out. This update is said to improve the security of the VRChat community. However, the community themselves is not too excited about the arrival of this update.

The Update

While other patches were addressed by VRChat the biggest concern was regarding Easy Anti Cheat. Easy Anti Cheat is a program developed by Epic Games that is often installed along with a supported game. For example Fortnite or Apex Legends. It prevents cheaters from abusing the game exploits to their advantage.

In VrChat’s patch notes it was said that “Modified clients” are a large problem for VRChat allowing users to attack and harass others, causing a huge amount of moderation issues. In order to prevent that, Easy Anti Cheat is being implemented into VRChat.

The integration of EAC means that all modified clients are blocked. It is said that even modifications that appear to be harmless will complicate the support and development of VRChat, and make it impossible for VRChat creators to work within the expected, documented bounds of VRChat. This is where the backlash against the security update comes in.

The Backlash

Many in the VRChat community have voiced their frustrations and concerns. In summary, the community believes this update only hurts VrChat. It makes things such as accessibility harder to achieve, and ruin creators’ maps and avatar creations. Petitions can be seen online requesting the overturn of this decision while others are rallying for a boycott of VRChat’s premium subscription service and the application as a whole.

In the patch notes, it is acknowledged that legitimate users install modifications to add features they wish VRChat had natively. Players were instructed to use the VRChat Feedback board to decide what potential modded features could be added to VRChat. No guarantee was promised for certain mods players have been using.
