Red Dead Online Getting Smaller Content Updates As Rockstar Shifts Resources Towards Next GTA Game

For the cowboys and cowgirls roaming the American Frontier in Red Dead Online, unfortunately the multiplayer mode for Red Dead Redemption 2 (that can be bought as a standalone title) won’t be getting any more major content.

In a lengthy Rockstar Newswire post, the developer has revealed some changes to how Red Dead Online is supported, as the team is “steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series- understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be.”

Red Dead Online won’t be getting major themed content- so don’t expect more Specialist roles or other big updates like that.

Instead, Red Dead Online will have monthly events highlighting already-available content but accessible for players of all levels, and new modes and Telegram missions will be added this year. And apart from seasonal price changes for items, that’s about it.

GTA Online is getting a better update, with new content as well as some much-needed changes that mitigate the issue of players griefing and harassing other players in their overpowered hoverbikes with homing missiles.

Rockstar has been shifting its resources for the next GTA for a few years now, and has publicly revealed that it is being worked on. GTA V was released in 2013 and as it reaches close to its 10th year anniversary, the game continues to sell well, enough to have the game ported across two more generations of consoles, with GTA Online being a huge money maker for the company.

Red Dead Online might be, uh, dead, but at least Red Dead Redemption 2 delivered a high-quality, cinematic single-player gaming experience that you would associate with a Rockstar game. You can check out our review of the game here.

Hopefully, GTA 6, or whatever the next GTA will be titled, can match the company’s repertoire and the exceedingly high player expectations, all while providing a good working environment for the developers.
