Skyrim: How To Power Level Enchanting

The Enchanting Skill plays a huge role in Skyrim, especially when power leveled to 100. It can give you the ability to deal crushing amounts of damage and completely erase Magicka costs – both significant advantages in a combat-heavy game. Without a doubt, it’s an incredibly important skill to level up if you want to become an ultra-powerful Dragonborn.

Power leveling Enchanting can be a bit tedious, but the most efficient method is actually fairly simple to execute. Additionally, the best thing about Enchanting is that you can use it to power level other abilities like Smithing or Alteration, making it a great skill to begin your power leveling journey with. Here’s our guide on quickly leveling up your Enchanting skill to give yourself an edge in the early game!

How Leveling Enchanting Works

Enchanting is one of six Mage category skills, as well as one of the three crafting skills in Skyrim. Through this skill, you’ll be able to apply enchantments and buffs to items like armor, weapons, and jewelry. You can gain Enchanting experience in the following ways:

  • Enchanting items. This is a given, but applying enchantments to items is the best way to level up the skill. The bigger the Soul Gem you use, the more experience you’ll get. All enchantments will give you the same amount of experience, but certain ones will produce much more valuable enchantments on items that you can sell for a significant profit.
  • Disenchanting an item. Though disenchanting will destroy the item, you’ll gain both XP and a new enchantment to apply to other items. The amount of XP gained is based on the power of the enchantment rather than the value of the item.
  • Use Soul Gems to recharge enchanted weapons. Experience gained this way is dependent on the size of the soul used – Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, Grand and Black.

In addition, there are two Standing Stones that can boost your Enchanting levelling: the Mage Stone and the Lover Stone. The Mage Stone will grant you a 20% bonus to all Mage-related skills, while the Lover Stone will grant you a 15% bonus to all skills.

If you’re focusing solely on Enchanting, it’s best to go for the Mage Stone; however, if you’re looking to power level multiple skills at once, the Lover Stone will be your best bet.

Easiest Ways To Power Level Enchanting

All in all, there isn’t much of a cheese to power leveling Enchanting. Your best bet to max this skill out quickly is to enchant cheap or easy-to-obtain items while simultaneously disenchanting any items you’re not using.

First, you’ll want to stock up on Soul Gems. These items are fairly easy to find, as most mages and Apothecary shops will have empty Soul Gems for you to purchase. Then, defeating enemies like Draugr will quickly fill up the gems, allowing you to build up your stock for later enchanting. Using the Soul Trap spell is also a great way to ensure you have a steady stream of Soul Gems coming your way.

Once you’ve amassed a solid collection of soul gems, you’ll want to build a stock of items to enchant. The easiest items to get are going to be weapons, as you’ll be able to buy them for lower prices on top of obtaining them from looting. Then, enchant away!

While all enchantments will grant the same experience, we recommend going for a Banish, Absorb Health, or Fortify Sneak enchantment. These will increase the value of the enchanted item much more than other enchantments, allowing you to sell the fruits of your labor for a hefty sum. In this way, you can ensure that you’ll always have enough money to continue buying Soul Gems and weapons to speed up the leveling process.

Here’s a bonus tip – a Fortify Enchanting potion will boost your Enchanting strength, allowing you to apply stronger enchantments to your items. These potions will take longer to get as you’ll have to craft them yourself, but they’ll also help boost your Alchemy skill at the same time.

Using Enchanting Skill Trainers

Along with the method described above, you can also track down two Enchanting skill trainers to help you quickly level up. Like any skill trainer, you’ll be able to train with them – for a fee – up to five times per level.

Expert Sergius Turrianus is a mage found in the College of Winterhold who can train you up to level 75. You’ll have to be a member of the College to train with him, but that questline will ultimately be helpful if you’re seeking a magic-based playstyle.

Master Hamal is a trainer in Markarth, and she’ll be able to train you up to level 90. Though she can boost your Enchanting level higher, her skill training only becomes available after you complete The Heart of Dibella quest.

Power Leveling Enchanting With Other Skills

The best thing about leveling up Enchanting is that you can do it in conjunction with other skills. This method is more time-consuming, but it’ll help you power level multiple essential skills at once.

  • Transmute Ore. Using the Alteration spell Transmute Mineral Ore, you can turn any iron or silver ore into gold. Gold is an incredibly useful material for Smithing, and can eventually be crafted into items prime for Enchanting. Transmuting a bunch of ore will rack up experience for Alteration as you prep to max out Smithing.
  • Create Jewelry from the gold. Gold Rings are the best item to craft from gold, as you’ll get two from each ingot. These rings will help you quickly power level Smithing, and you’ll end up with more jewelry than you know what to do with. You could sell them, or proceed to step three.
  • Enchant all the jewelry. Adding enchantments to the Gold Rings will net you XP and increase the value of the ring. So, not only will you boost your Enchanting skill, but you’ll have better items to sell for even more Septims. A win-win!
