South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm Preview

Seventh-placed South Sydney has inched to within two points of the Top 4 courtesy of its first three-match winning run of 2022 – a Latrell Mitchell-inspired trio of victories over Parramatta, Newcastle and Canterbury.

The mercurial fullback took Sunday’s clash against the feisty Bulldogs by the scruff of the neck, scoring a dazzling solo try and laying on three more to lead the Rabbitohs to a 36-28 win. The effect Mitchell has had on the form of under-fire halves Cody Walker and Lachlan Ilias has been palpable.

Meanwhile, Melbourne is in unfamiliar territory, slipping to fourth with its first three-match losing streak in seven years and losing gun fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen for the season. The rattled Storm fell just short in a 20-16 thriller at home to the Raiders last Sunday.

Nick Meaney returns to No.1 jumper, with Mr. Fix-it Tyran Wishart named on the wing and Grant Anderson coming back on the bench. NSW duo Cameron Murray and Damien Cook slot back into Souths’ line-up, while Jed Cartwright has been promoted to start at centre for Taane Milne.

The Storm have won their last seven against the Rabbitohs and boast an eye-watering 31-5 overall record in the rivalry. They played out a golden point thriller in Round 2, with Papenhuyzen kicking a golden point field goal for a 15-14 win after Souths had fought back from 14-0 down in the second half.

Despite their slide and horrendous injury toll, the Storm head to Sydney as $1.72 favourites. They have won their last four at Accor Stadium, but the Rabbitohs are 5-1 at the venue in 2022.

It’s vital for Melbourne to make a statement here – and a team containing Munster, Hughes and Grant, along with a rep-stacked forward pack, can’t be taken lightly.
