St. George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

The mid-table logjam has been a fascinating, ever-changing beast with eighth spot being handed around on a weekly basis. But it’s been a disastrous fortnight for St George Illawarra Dragons since they last sat in eighth after a 4-1 run.

The Saints were woeful in a 32-18 loss to a severely depleted Broncos side and capitulated 54-26 to the Roosters after grabbing a 20-all share of the lead at the 50-minute mark. Ranked 11th defensively, the Dragons have slipped to 11th on the ladder – and now coach Anthony Griffin is reportedly under the pump.

Manly is only two points ahead but returned to the Top 8 for the first time since Round 9 with a 42-12 thumping of Newcastle, piling on five second-half tries to record their fourth win in five games. As Ben Hunt was for the Saints, Daly Cherry-Evans was sublime for the Sea Eagles just 72 hours after a gruelling SOO decider.

Moses Suli is a big out for the Dragons, with Moses Mbye to slot in at centre. Tariq Sims is back from suspension at Aaron Woods’ expense. Manly lose Jake Trbojevic to COVID but can call upon giant Taniela Paseka, with Toafofoa Sipley moving into the starting side.

St George Illawarra has won six of its last eight against Manly, though honours were shared in 2021: Saints prevailed 38-12 in Wollongong in Round 3 but the Sea Eagles carved out a 32-18 victory on the Gold Coast in Round 18.

The clash between inspirational, in-form captains and halfbacks and Origin teammates Hunt and Cherry-Evans is the headline attraction here. But DCE has much more accomplished, cohesive and dangerous support cast around him. The Sea Eagles are just 3-7 away from Brookvale I can’t them blowing this opportunity against an out-of-sorts host.
