We Won’t Get Another Infamous For A While, And That’s A Shame

It’s been 25 years since Sucker Punch Productions opened its doors and seven years since the release of the last Infamous game, Second Son. In a statement released earlier at the start of July 2022, the developer quickly dashed the hopes of the superhero series’ fans by stating “With our focus on our current project, we have no plans to revisit inFamous or Sly Cooper right now… and no other studio is currently working on projects related to those franchises either.” This announcement carries a higher level of pain than an electric bolt shot from the hand of Cole MacGrath.

The first game sold over 1.2 million units and its two sequels did similar numbers. What separates the Infamous series from the myriad other video games that involve superpowered beings is that these games really put you in the driver’s seat of your own destiny, utilizing a karma system that had a big impact on your moment-to-moment play experience as well as the story.

If you play like a hero, keep damage to a minimum and stay on the straight and narrow path, you will be rewarded with a heroic ending. But if you decide to go full Magneto-mode on enemies, tear down guard towers and wreak havoc, you will be viewed as an enemy – not just to you, but in Infamous Second Son’s case to those who love you.

In Infamous Second Son you play as a conduit – this game’s term for ‘superpowered person’ – and graffiti artist known as Delsin Rowe. If you decide to be a hero and make honorable decisions, then the game’s main antagonist Brooke Augustin is arrested for her heinous actions, and the D.U.P. – Department of Unified Protection – is disbanded. The D.U.P. was a government organization in the game that was tasked with arresting conduits. Augustin is its leader and shared the department’s view of conduits not as beings with spectacular powers that can aid the government, but as bio-terrorists.

But if you use your powers nefariously and have a bad karma level, then you – a Native American – will be exiled from your tribe and in your anger destroy the entire reservation. Ouch.

Delsin has an ability like Rogue from the X-Men where he can absorb the powers of other conduits. Some of the powers he absorbs from other conduits include a form of pyrokinesis, super speed and agility, and the ability to throw pixelated projectiles. These unique versions of powers are what help this series stand out from others that also involve superpowered beings. It is a mystery as to what other project Sucker Punch is currently working on, but once that game is released, their next project should be an Infamous sequel.

Sucker Punch is still breathing some life into the inFamous series even if it is the older games. In the released statement the studio said it will be performing maintenance on the inFamous 2 UGC (user-generated content) servers and wants to keep them running as long as possible. They’re going to be adding the Cole’s Legacy DLC to the PlayStation Store as well.

Sucker Punch is a bright bulb when it comes to developers, they know their fans cherish this series and are doing everything they can outside of making a new game to ensure people can enjoy the series for as long as they can.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns will be releasing this year, Gotham Knights is releasing in late October, and Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is supposed to release in the Spring of 2023. Insomniac currently has Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine in development. It’s time to bring back the a self-made series that doesn’t have the crutch of a major license to lean on, and let it do battle with its superhero peers.
