Worlds 2022: Royal Never Give Up takes down Gen.G Esports after one-sided match

Gen.G Esports has lost its first match of the Group Stage.

LCK’s Gen.G Esports played its first match of the Group Stage against LPL’s Royal Never Give Up today, eventually taking home a win after a fairly intense match. While the game preceding this went by a lot quicker than expected, GEN’s loss today took place over a longer and much more painful series of mistakes.

MSI Champions versus LCK’s first seed! Breathe took the first kill of the game against GEN’s Doran, and GEN lost Chovy shortly after. This gave RNG a pretty early gold lead, along with a Herald and a dragon to boot – a solid early game performance overall, but there was still time for GEN to recover. Wei went down to give GEN its first kill 13 minutes in, making a nice little win for a team trying hard to play catchup. GEN leaped onto Breathe, but Breathe managed to take Ruler with him on his way out.

RNG had pushed into GEN’s jungle and gained a turret, but the midlane turret was still denying the team map control. The team did eventually pick up five objectives in a slow but successful push towards GEN’s push, leaving the enemy team with few options left besides trying to defend whatever it had left standing. RNG pushed in for an Infernal Soul with little contest from GEN, leaving the team in a nigh-impossible position and a 6k gold deficit.

This was one of the more one-sided matches we’ve seen today. GEN made an attempt to slay the Baron for an endgame advantage, but RNG slaughtered the team for it. That makes two wins in a row due to a miscalculated Baron push, a mistake we’ve seen an absurd amount of teams make in Worlds 2022 so far. With GEN wiped out, the MSI champions seized an easy victory.

On Monday, we’ll see RNG go up against Flying Oyster while GEN takes on 100 Thieves.
