Lollipop Chainsaw, the cult-hit character action game is getting a remake. The remake will be developed by Dragami Games (a new studio split from Kadokawa Games) which consists of a mix of veterans that worked on the original 2012 release, including producer Yoshimi Yasuda, as well as new team members.

The original game stars cheerleader Juliet Starling, a cheerleader and zombie hunter who fights with a chainsaw and is accompanied by the sentient, talking head of her boyfriend. The game idea was conceived by Yasuda and Goichi Suda (Suda51) and developed by both Grasshopper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games.

The game was published outside of Japan by Warner Bros. and also includes Hollywood director James Gunn on writing duties.

The original game is currently delisted, and according to Yasuda, what prompted the need for a Lollipop Chainsaw remake.

“We, the original development staff of Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot,” Yasuda said on Twitter.

“As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake.”

Yasuda also mentioned that the team have contacted Warner Bros. and “are being supported by them in this endeavour”.

The remake will see some tweaks and changes from the original release. Not all of the 15 licensed songs will be coming back, and will be replaced with new music. Plus, the team are targeting “a more realistic approach to graphics” thanks to the current generation of console’s higher performance compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The remake for Lollipop Chainsaw is targeting a 2023 release.
