2022 NFL Season Betting Picks & Analysis: Winners for Week 5

Before the start of the 2022 season, I thought that the Las Vegas Raiders were an interesting value pick to win the AFC West. Quarterback Derek Carr had the offensive mastermind of the New England Patriots’ juggernaut, Josh McDaniels, coming in as the new head coach, and the Raiders had brought Davante Adams in from Green Bay. However, the season started with a thud, as the Raiders limped out to an 0-3 record. They finally picked up their first win of 2022 when Denver visited in Week 4, thanks to 144 yards and two touchdowns from tailback Josh Jacobs. The success of the running game set the stage for Carr to find Adams open, and the former Packer led the way with nine receptions for 101 yards on 13 targets. The score ended up closer than the reality of the game, as the Raiders had a hard time finding the end zone in the red zone. How will this week turn out for NFL betting enthusiasts? We have some winners for you to consider for Week 5.

NFL News: Sure Winners for Week 5

Sunday, October 9

San Francisco 49ers (-5) at Carolina Panthers (39.5)
(4:05 pm ET, CBS)

The San Francisco 49ers are finding their rhythm under Jimmy Garoppolo, who is leading the offense again in one of the most bizarre situations in recent memory: the 49ers had spent the off-season trying to deal away the quarterback who led them to the NFC Championship, only to bench him behind Trey Lance when they couldn’t find a taker. Now that Lance is done for the season, Jimmy G’s legend is only growing. His numbers on Monday night were not all that stellar against the Rams, but as color commentator Troy Aikman noted during the game, he played very well after a subpar Week 3, leading the 49ers on key touchdown drives despite a ferocious Ram rush. Next up for the 49ers is a trip to Carolina, but the addition of Baker Mayfield has not been able to paper over a number of problems for the Panthers. Head coach Matt Rhule has not managed to get his defensive scheme up and running, and even with a healthy Christian McCaffrey, Rhule’s offensive system is not generating enough movement up and down the field. 49ers to win and cover.

Houston Texans (+7) at Jacksonville Jaguars
(44.5) (1:00 pm ET, CBS)

The Texans looked better last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, particularly on offense, but the Chargers’ running game ran all over the Texans, and the Texans’ secondary gave up big play after big play. Jacksonville has a front seven that will get after Davis Mills, and the Jaguars’ offense has come alive with the arrival of Doug Pedersen. I did not think that Pedersen would turn out to be the right choice to coach the Jaguars, but the team already looks much better than they did under Urban Meyer last season. I see the Jaguars dealing out some pain on both sides of the ball. Jaguars to win and cover.

Monday, October 10

Las Vegas Raiders (+7) at Kansas City Chiefs (51)
(8:15 pm ET, ESPN)

This should be an interesting game, as both teams have settled into a rhythm with both the running and passing games. Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a huge night for the Chiefs in their win over Tampa Bay on Sunday, but Josh Jacobs put even bigger numbers for the Raiders on Sunday. Derek Carr has won duels against Patrick Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium before, so it will be interesting to see how the Chiefs respond in the secondary. The way that Kansas City shut down the Tampa Bay passing game was impressive, but the Buccaneers’ practice schedule had some hiccups the previous week thanks to the arrival of Hurricane Ian. This is a game that I could see coming down to the last drive – which means that seven-point line is a little high for me. Raiders to cover.
