Evercade EXP is a brand new retro-infused handheld coming this winter

Evercade has been celebrating its second anniversary today, and during its stream showcasing the company’s future it announced the arrival of a brand new handheld called the Evercade EXP.

It did start with the tiniest note of sadness, as the original Evercade handheld is being discontinued. However, the new all-white Evercade EXP is set to be a huge step up in terms of its capabilities and build. First off, the new console looks a lot sleaker and modern than the original device, skewing towards the design of the Nintendo Switch Lite or the Odin. There’s twin shoulder buttons on each side, and it now has WiFi built in allowing for firmware upgrades and the like. That might also be how you are able to get the bonus content that they hinted at, with further announcements to come in September.

Fans of retro shooters will be particularly pleased by the inclusion of a TATE mode, allowing you to turn the system on its side and take advantage of the extra screen space as you fly your craft up the screen destroying everything in your way, in the ratio that the original developers intended.

There’s a 4.3″ IPS screen which should mean those retro titles will look their absolute best, and there’s a thoroughly modern USB-C charging port. Bringing the technological advances that the Evercade VS home console did there’s a 1.5Ghz processor and 4GB of built in RAM which should mean that Evercade will stay at the forefront of retro collections, and bringing new indie experiences to players as well.

The Evercade EXP launches Winter 2022, for the wholly acceptable price of £129.99, and includes Irem Arcade Collection 1. Pre-orders go live in September.

Like the Evercade VS, there will also be a limited edition alternate version of the Evercade EXP available in a different colour that will be on sale for £179.99 from Funstock, with pre-orders starting on the 1st of June at 5pm BST. Alongside the Irem Arcade Collection 1 it also includes the Toaplan Arcade 1 collection, a hard case, key ring, poster, art cards, and other extras. Most importantly though it’s solid black. There will only be 5000 units produced.
