The Gen.G vs Sentinels matchup is the final series of Masters Madrid, where the winners will secure a $250,000 prize, 3 VCT Points, and Valorant’s first international title of 2024.

The Masters Madrid Grand Final has concluded, with Sentinels taking the trophy against South Korean dark horse squad Gen.G. This series went to the distance by reaching the fifth map. Both teams had incredible moments, and here is our short recap of such an exciting final.

Winning the upper bracket final gave Gen.G the map veto advantage. The South Koreans took full advantage of the fact and banned Lotus and Sunset – maps where Sentinels had strong results at this event.

This is a tough map pool for Sentinels, and they will need to bring a strong look to secure a grand final victory.

Gen.G opted for their classic double-Duelist composition with Jett and Yoru and continued to go for their unusual Astra pick. Sentinels’ composition, on the other hand, is a more common one we usually see compared to their opponent’s double-Controller pick. 

The first half ended with a 7-5 score in Gen.G’s favor, as they started on attack and won the pistol. There were several clutch plays from the South Koreans, including the 3K from Kim “Karon” Won-tae. Their post-plants looked strong with utilities from Viper, Astra and Sova. 

Sentinels evened the scoreline to 7-7 by winning the pistols in the second half but quickly lost the grip after losing against an eco. Although the North Americans looked much better than their last time playing this map, Gen.G were the better team by a good margin. 

After the eco loss, the South Koreans did not allow a single round to go in favor of their opponents, with Byeon “Munchkin” Sang-beom shutting down Sentinels multiple times while defending B on Viper.

Sentinels went for a double-Initiator and double-Controller composition on Bind, while Gen.G had a usual comp with a Cypher in the mix and only a single Initiator. 

The North Americans started on the defense with a pistol win, and then there was back and forth as both squads fought for map control through many slow rounds. 

Munchkin, again, had incredible moments as the half ended with even scores. 

Going into defense, the South Koreans secured a huge advantage by winning the pistol and the bonus, securing a 9-6 lead. Sentinels eventually broke the economy of Gen.G by winning five consecutive rounds, but a loss against an eco stopped their momentum. Another 6-6 half led the map to overtime. 

Some great reads and incredible fights allowed Sentinels to take Bind with a 14-12 score.

Both teams used the meta comp on Ascent, and the half ended with 6-6. Sentinels started on defense, and they needed a round advantage in the first half to have a better chance on attack. Tyson “TenZ” Ngo and zekken did incredibly to stop the pushes of Gen.G. 

The South Koreans won the pistol and bonus once again in the second half, getting a 10-6 score in their favor. Kim “t3xture” Na-ra, although got countered a few times by zekken on the other side, had great impacts that helped Gen.G get a 13-8 victory.

Split is supposed to be the best Sentinels map, but this is exactly where Gen.G defeated them in their last encounter. The North Americans were going against a double-Duelist composition that did not have any Sentinel Agent, and they started the map on defense with a pistol round win. 

The clear hero of the first half was 19-year-old zekken, who had a 20-9 K-D that helped Sentinels secure an 8-4 half. 

Gen.G quickly started working towards evening out the scoreline on their defense, starting with a pistol victory. The closest they got to this goal was 10-11, breaking their opponents’ economy in round 19.

TenZ helped his team bounce back with a 3K in the eco round, leading to a 13-10 victory and the series to the fifth map.

You know it’s a great final when it reaches map 5, and in this case, it was Icebox. Both teams picked a mirror comp with double-Initiator and Killjoy as the Sentinel. 

Sentinels started out strong on defense, with Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro turning up for the team for a 7-5 half in their favor. 

The South Koreans couldn’t find any answer against Sentinels’ attack, only winning a single round. Their OP barely found any value, and Sentinels had clear reads on their site stacks.

And with that, Sentinels are our Masters Madrid champions with a 3-2 series score. This team has slowly risen to the top from their off-season win at AfreecaTV Valorant League. The North Americans continued their excellent form by winning the Americas Kickoff. Now, they have further solidified themselves as the current best team in the world. 

We are going to see this team next time in the Americas Stage 1, and potentially in the next Masters taking place in Shanghai.
