LoL Patch 12.23b Mid-Patch Notes: Last Update of 2022

As we are ready to say goodbye to 2022, we got the last patch of the year.

For the next couple of weeks, there won’t be any new LoL patches as Riot and the dev team are taking a break for the holiday season. So we are getting a heftier-than-usual mid-patch update with the hopes of the game staying in a more balanced state during that time. The changes were tweeted by Riot’s Summoner’s Rift design team lead, Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison, as usual, who also explained some of their thought process about the changes.

For example, the Lux buffs in the patch are mainly aimed at the mid lane position, while trying to keep support performance at the same level she is on 12.23. Although it is hard to do it with AP ratios, as the support Lux also buys AP items most of the time. We also had a follow-up to the mini adjustment Mundo got in the 12.23 patch. He was stronger than the balance team intended, so they are bringing his late-game power down a step or two.

There are also multiple changes to champion and items that the community has been complaining about. Ravenous Hydra and Jak’Sho were two items must-buy for every bruiser, and more, and were performing too well. They are getting some nerfs, although they are smaller in scale, especially Hydra, so there can be more to see in patch 13.1. Another problematic champion in Udyr also got some attention. Udyr with his Prowler’s Claw build coupled with the recent Q-stance buffs was doing too much burst damage. So a lot of his changes are focused on bringing that ability to a more balanced state. There are also multiple jungle changes on the patch once again.

Phroxzon also talked about some of the planned changes for 13.1 on his Twitter page. The main ones were changes to Rod of Ages and Seraph’s Embrace, which are two AP items that feel bad to purchase and use, and Radiant Virtue broadening. Currently, only a handful of support champions prefer Radiant Virtue over other tank items, so it seems like it will need some adjustments in the next patches as well.
