Need For Speed Unbound Shows New Snippets Of Car Customisation

It’s another week of new information for the upcoming racing game Need For Speed Unbound.

The new arcade racer by Criterion Games will have something NFS fans didn’t expect from this developer: car customisation.

Car customisation has been a trademark feature since NFS Underground, and the previous Criterion NFS games didn’t have them (NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 was a throwback of pre-Underground Need For Speeds, whilst NFS Most Wanted 2012 only had limited performance customisation but no visual changes other than pre-set colours).

NFS Unbound continues the trend from more recent games with full visual customisation, decal edits and even bumper deletes.

There’s a total of 10,000 customisation options, but that number includes wraps, cutaways and rims. Some cars will likely have more customisation than others.

But there will be “Legendary Customs”, which dramatically changes the whole look of a car. Two cars are shown to have this option: the BMW M1 Procar gets big wings and a lot of its bodywork removed, whilst the Land Rover Defender gets slammed down and chopped to make it look like a souped-up pickup truck.

Need For Speed Unbound will also be adding new rims. There are some wacky designs, and plenty of deep dishes, fitting given the setting of the game.

The wrap editor gets a refresh, UI-wise, and there will be more default decals to choose from- there is at least one anime girl that you slap on the side of your whip.

Also, it looks like you can only remove the rear bumper. It’s a cool addition- there are various rides especially customised drift machines that are built without a rear bumper so it has ties to car culture. But expecting to remove more than just that is asking a bit too much.

The blog post didn’t mention it, but there is at least an image of Bosozoku exhaust tips, yes those heart-shaped tips are overly-long exhaust pipes.

If there’s still any hesitance from fans about Criterion’s previous track record, what’s being shown here should instil some confidence that car customisation in the Need For Speed series is still second to none.

Need For Speed Unbound will be out on December 2 on the PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, EA App) and Xbox Series X|S.
