NFL Week 12: Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots Betting Preview

If you want an indicator of how unpredictable NFL football is this season, the Tennessee Titans (8-3) currently hold the AFC’s top seed — but they have lost to two woeful teams, the New York Jets and the Houston Texans, while also taking down the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. Their next game comes in New England against the Patriots (7-4), winners of five in a row. The Titans just suffered that loss to Houston at home a week ago, bringing their six-game winning streak to a crashing halt and making the AFC’s playoff race more interesting than it needed to be.

Can the Patriots move into a tie with Tennessee atop the AFC? We have your NFL betting preview here.

Why should you bet on the Titans?

Tennessee fell at home last week, 22-13, as the Houston Texans ended their eight-game losing streak; coming in Week 11, this was the latest in a regular season that a team with the league’s worst record had beaten a team with the league’s best record since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Titans had 420 yards of offense to just 190 for Houston, but the Titans saw Ryan Tannehill throw four interceptions, the most in his career — three coming in the fourth quarter. Tennessee also gave away a fumble.

Injuries are also a factor for Tennessee, starting with tailback Derrick Henry, who is done for the rest of the regular season (but who could return for a postseason run). Wide receiver Julio Jones will miss at least three more games, and linebacker Bud Dupree is on injured reserve. Wide receiver A.J. Brown went down with a chest injury during the loss to Houston. With that much offensive talent either questionable or out, the Titans will have a hard time moving the ball against an aggressive an opportunistic New England defense. If you like the Titans, you see Tannehill finding Robby Anderson down the field and the Titans’ defense frustrating Mac Jones.

Why should you put your money on the Patriots?

If you thought that it would be a while before the Pats returned as contenders in the post-Tom Brady era, think again. Mac Jones has emerged as a quality quarterback in his rookie season, and the defense is the team’s best unit, leaving it to the offense to manage games. New England blanked Atlanta last Thursday, 25-0. In that game, Jones went 22 of 26 for 207 yards and a touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor.

It was the defense that was the real story, though, as Matt Ryan threw four interceptions, including a pick-six to Kyle Van Noy in the fourth quarter. In the last four games, the New England defense has permitted just 13 points. Linebacker Matthew Judon had a sack in the Atlanta game and now has 10 ½ on the season, a career high. That was just one of four sacks of Matt Ryan on the day.

Final Score and Betting Prediction

In this five-game winning streak, New England has also covered in each game. The Titans have only covered twice in their last seven games against the Patriots, and in games coming after a performance in which they scored 15 or fewer points, the Titans have only covered once in five opportunities. If you like the Patriots here, you see the same formula of an opportunistic defense giving the offense opportunities working — and it is a formula that worked for Houston last week. I predict a final score of New England 24, Tennessee 13.
