Prime Video is looking to create a live action God of War TV series

Deadline are reporting that a God of War TV series may be coming to Amazon’s Prime Video service.

It is said that The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are involved, as is The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkin, and of course Sony’s PlayStation Productions tv and film arm.

Amazon already have TV shows based on Fallout and Mass Effect in the works, and a God of War series would be the third show from PlayStation Productions as series based on The Last of Us and Twisted Metal are already in production.

A film based on God of War was announced in 2012 but never made it to the screen. Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven DeKnight had talks with Sony about and R-rated God of War movie in 2018 but that also fell by the wayside.

The God of War franchise has been around since 2005 and has seen Kratos slaughter most of the Greek gods and one or two of the Nordic deities as well. The TV series could be an origin story set in in ancient Greece or they may choose to ignore that portion of Kratos’ life and focus on the grumpier, older version of the god slayer found in the most recent game.

There’s also the big question of who on earth could play Kratos. Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista might be a good call, he has the heft and has also shown he can play more thoughtful roles. Jason Mamoa has also been suggested, or Tom Hardy if they go for the more younger version of Kratos.

However, Forbes writer Paul Tassi has the best suggestion for a younger Kratos: Wes Chatham. He has just finished a six series run playing Amos in The Expanse so will be familiar to Fergus and Ostby. He’s a big muscly hunk, he gives good beard and he’s been playing an emotionless killer for years.

God of War Ragnarok took the top spot in our Our Most Wanted Games of 2022, you can read more about that here.
