Project Rene Teased: “Next-Generation” The Sims Game In The Works

The Sims 4 is now free-to-play, which begs the question: is there a new The Sims game coming, then? The answer is yes, as revealed in The Sims Summit live stream, but it’s still early in the works.

So early that it’s still being introduced with its working title: Project Rene.

This is described as “the future of The Sims” and a little snippet was shown, highlighting furniture customisation.

Project Rene will allow players to fully customise objects with different variants. What was shown includes the following:

  • Turning an option to change a double bed into a single bed
  • Changing the foot and the head shapes of the bed
  • Changing pattern design and colour (separately) (with a colour wheel) cushion shapes of a sofa
  • objects that can be placed on top of furniture with full rotation on the x,y and z axis
  • Collaborate with other players in building the house
  • furniture can be placed freely (not bound to grid)
  • Cross-play, including on mobile devices

The Sims development team are still committed to providing content for The Sims 4, The Sims Freeplay and The Sims Mobile, all of them now free-to-play. The Sims 4 will have two more expansion packs, and something related to babies is expected to arrive next year.

But it looks like Project Rene, or whatever the next-gen The Sims game will be called (The Sims 5 maybe?) will have building customisation tools as robust as Paralives, a still-in-development indie life sim game. But having the mobile version be in parity with the rest of the platforms it will be out on is definitely cool to see.
