Spider-Man content comes to Marvel’s Avengers on November 30th

Spider-Man will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers on November 30th, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed. This is the Spider-Man content that will be exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. The hero event is called With Great Power, and in this event Peter finds evidence that AIM is developing technology that will make the Synthoid army near unstoppable, so he partners with Ms Marvel and Black Widow to stop the threat.

As you can see from the Marvel’s Avengers roadmap above, Spider-Man is not the only content arriving on the 30th. Klaw’s Discordant Sound raid will be added to the game on the same day. Earnable cosmetics will also be added and a new enemy type called Echoes. The power level cap will also be raised. This news follows the backtrack regarding microtransactions that meant players could buy perks to increase the XP earned, which was something the studio originally said was something it would not do.

In other news, Square Enix admitted in its quarterly report that Marvel’s Avengers was not a success and hinted that Crystal Dynamics was perhaps not the best studio to have assigned to the project. In the report, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda said:

“I would also note that “Marvel’s Avengers” was an ambitious title for us in that we took on the GaaS (Games as a Service) model. We overcame a variety of unexpected difficulties in the final phase of the game’s development, including needing to transition to work-from-home due to the pandemic. We were able to surmount these challenges and release the game, but it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked.

Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams. While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.”
