Modern Warfare 2 will add a new Warzone map, PvE game mode

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will add a third map to Warzone as well as a bold new PvE game mode according to industry sources.

This latest report comes via VGC who has shared a number of reports on Activision and Infinity Ward’s upcoming sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare.

Slated for a late 2022 release, Modern Warfare 2 is said to be another major turning point for the annualised FPS franchise. It has been reported that another Warzone map is on the way, following Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Pacific Caldera map which launches later this year.

It’s claimed that the new battleground will be a patchwork of fan favourite maps from the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These include multiplayer arenas such as Afghan, Quarry, Terminal, and Trailer Park. Of course, none of this has been verified by Activision or Infinity Ward.

If Vanguard’s reveal is anything to by, we’re a good eight or nine months away from getting even the faintest whiff of MW2, let alone its plans for the free-to-play Warzone.

So, what else has been allegedly leaked about the next CoD? VGC has partially verified with sources that the sequel’s campaign will follow Task Force 141 on another globe-trotting adventure. Much like the previous reboot, it won’t follow the same storyline as the original Modern Warfare trilogy – instead it will see Captain Price and his elite crew attempting to take down the Colombian drug cartel.

It will be gritty and intimate, shaky rumours hinting that there may be a morality system. The cartel will also show up in MW2’s new multiplayer game mode. As yet untitled, this has been likened to Battlefield 2042’s Hazard Zone with squads battling AI hostiles as well as other teams to complete objectives. This is all said to take place within the aforementioned third Warzone map.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty Vanguard is now available to pre-load on consoles. Thanks to the implementation of on-demand texture streaming and new compression techniques for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the initial download size for Call of Duty: Vanguard is as follows:

  • PlayStation 5: 64.13 GB Download | 89.84 GB Required Space
  • PlayStation 4: 54.65 GB Download | 93.12 GB Required Space
  • Xbox Series X |S: 61 GB Download | 61 GB Required Space
  • Xbox One: 56.6 GB Download | 56.6 GB Required Space

Compared to the eye-watering 95GB on PS4 and 133GB on PS5 that Black Ops Cold War needed to preload, this is a huge reduction in size.

Vanguard will launch with a total of 20 multiplayer maps, a new Champion Hill game mode, and the next chapter in the Zombies Aether storyline, Der Anfang.
