San Jose Sharks’ Tomas Hertl and William Eklund Shine

On Tuesday the Sharks made an impressive comeback to beat the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime hockey. 

Tomas Hertl came out of the game with a hat trick, scoring goals in the first period and two in the third. Hertl’s first goal was assisted by Anthony Duclair at 12:19 in the opening period. Duclair has three goals and two assists in his last three games. 

After the second, the Sharks were trailing at 2-1. Goals came from the opposing Julien Gauthier and Brock Nelson. 

The comeback

In the third, the Islanders had the opportunity to put the Sharks to bed with a shorthanded goal at 5:17 from Mike Reilly. The Isles’ Ryan Pulock made it 4-1 with a power play goal assisted by Reilly and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. 

San Jose’s  Kevin Labanc responded with a goal at 11:55 assisted by Nikita Okhotiuk. Labanc has one goal and an assist in his last two games. 

Hertl scored his second and third just 1:41 apart with assists from Mikael Granlund and Alexander Barabanov. 

William Eklund picked up assists for both of the goals. The winger has two goals and two assists in the last three games. 

With Hertl tying it up in the third, the Sharks and Islanders went on to play overtime hockey.

Less than five seconds left in OT, Eklund won it for the Sharks and earned the second star of the game. 

Granlund picked up another assist on the Sharks’ overtime goal, his fifth in the past three games. 

Closing thoughts

The Sharks were outshot narrowly at 39-37, showing improvement for matching shots on net. In all of San Jose’s seven wins this season they have been outshot. 

17 out of the 26 games the Sharks have played this season, the team only managed one goal. Over their last three, they scored at least three, giving hope for more offensive development. 

On Monday, Ryan Carpenter and Ty Emberson were placed on injured reserve. 

The Sharks face the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday before returning to home ice against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
