CSGO Beta Depot Update Finally Updates Archaic Replay Viewer demoUI

The CS:GO demoUI is notorious for its slow pace and laggy performance. Despite being critical for players to review their performances, the interface would take a long time to load. Counter-Strike professionals have been demanding changes to this feature since CS:GO’s release, but it has taken Valve several years to finally release an update.

The latest update allows smoother forwarding and rewinding of demo files. Playback of demo files will now create full-frame baselines which significantly improves performance.

What is Valve’s demoUI?

Valve’s demoUI was an archaic system with origins in Quake 1996. The system has received very few updates since CS:Source and was extremely slow to use, making in inefficient for teams and players looking to improve by analyzing film of previous performances..

The biggest reason for the demoUI’s laggy performance was the system would re-read all video files in case of rewind or a fast-forward. Players would often have to wait several minutes just to fast forward or rewind a few rounds. It was frustratingly slow.

The new demoUI takes just a few seconds to go to a particular round (after the initial loading period). An action that would take upwards of eighty seconds in the old system takes just five seconds after the update.

How Does the New CSGO Replay System Work?

The recent changes to the demoUI do not change the visuals but is a significant upgrade to the performance. However, the system now places keyframes at the start of every round.

Once the system reads the file, it is much easier to go back or move to another round by accessing these keyframes. It still takes a long time for the first read of older files, but the entire process of watching your replay is significantly faster now.

In order to access the demoUI, CS:GO players should enable the console. After opening the console, enter ‘demoui’ to access the replay console. The demoui has many functionalities including the ability to move forward or rewind to a previous round.

Valve’s update comes after a recent scandal that saw thirty-seven coaches receive ESIC bans. The coaches abused a CS:GO visual bug to gain an unfair advantage for their teams in professional matches.

Michal Slowinski and Steve Dudenhoeffer spent hundreds of hours going through professional matches dating back to 2016 in search of these exploits. This new replay infrastructure will hopefully prevent similar cheating scandals on this scale in the future.
