Gran Turismo 7 Music Rally mode revealed, but what is it?

The Gran Turismo 7 State of Play has given us a good long look at the long-awaited racing game sequel, revealing some interesting new modes in the process. Music Rally is a new attempt to combine driving and music in video game form.

So what is GT7’s Music Rally and how does it work? Music Rally takes the classic arcade checkpoint races, where you’re driving as fast as you can to hit checkpoints before your time runs out, and adapts it to work with music. Instead of having seconds ticking down, you have beats, and they decrease to the BPM of whatever music is playing.

Your goal is to reach checkpoints and earn more beats so that you can keep on driving, the ultimate goal being to survive until the end of the track.

This is just one way in which Polyphony Digital are trying to steer Gran Turismo 7 toward capturing the spirit of automotive enthusiasm in their game. The sequel features a classic world map for the main menu, aiming to be a paradise-like vacation resort for car fandom, while the single player is built around the central Café and Menu Book quests, while regaling you with tales from the creation of the various cars.

Gran Turismo 7 will have 34 locations and 97 layouts, with over 400 cars to collect. More tracks and cars will be added after release via online updates. The single player will feature license tests, mission races, drift trials and more at each location.

Another big returning feature is the dynamic weather and time of day change on certain tracks, the simulation of these elements feeding back into car physics engine through atmospheric effects, surface temperature and grip.

Gran Turismo 7 will release on 4th March 2022 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The PS5 version of the game will have exclusive technical advantages, such as faster loading times, ray tracing in certain situations, 3D Audiotech and advanced haptics and adaptive triggers through the DualSense controller.
